Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist

Mr-Richard-J-Sheridan

Mr Sheridan qualified from Guy’s Hospital Medical School in 1979. He then went on to train in Southampton, at Queen Charlotte’s Maternity Hospital and then as a registrar and senior registrar at Guy’s and at St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington. He was an NHS Senior Consultant at West Herts Health Trust from 1991 – 2015, and now concentrates on his busy private obstetrics and gynaecology practice based in Hertfordshire. He is also an examiner for the final membership examination of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

His private office and secretary are based at Spire Bushey Hospital, where gynaecological in-patients are admitted and gynaecological outpatient appointments and early pregnancy scanning take place. He also has an antenatal clinic at Centennial Medical Care in Elstree in Hertfordshire which is approved and registered by the Care Quality Commission. This unique clinic is the first private facility licensed to provide Maternity & Midwifery services outside of Central London. Traditionally women who wish to have their babies privately have to travel into their chosen Central London hospital for antenatal care however with this unique accreditation, women from Hertfordshire, North London and further afield now have access to a local antenatal service.

Deliveries take place at the world renowned Queen Charlottes & Chelsea Maternity Hospital in Shepherds Bush, with postnatal care on Sir Stanley Clayton Ward.

Unusually, for an Obstetrician, he works alongside Sarah Denning, an experienced midwife, practising together as The Birth Team (thebirthteam.com) offering all aspects of care during pregnancy and delivery.

In his NHS clinics he was involved in the care of high-risk pregnant women with medical conditions and endocrine problems, as well as other complications of pregnancy. His role included fetal scanning and amniocentesis. With over 20 years experience of labour ward management, he spent time regularly on the labour ward teaching junior doctors how to manage difficult or complicated deliveries.

He is a general gynaecologist, doubly qualified, a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists of London. He performs open abdominal surgery, vaginal surgery and keyhole surgery for heavy periods, fibroids, cysts, prolapse and incontinence. He has a large hormone replacement therapy practice and has interests in premenstrual syndrome as well as the menopause.
