This is a straight forward procedure which is performed under local anesthetic and involves your sperm being aspirated from the tube that lies above and behind each testicle using a fine needle and syringe. The procedure is carried out by a consultant Uro-Andrologist.

Egg collection also called egg retrieval is one of the most critical components of the IVF process. The total time taken for this process is between 30-45 minutes and the egg collection day is decided by the fertility expert considering your medical history and body’s response to medications. 

Before the egg collection, the doctor will inject a trigger injection 36 hours before the planned egg collection procedure. This injection triggers the final maturation of eggs and makes them ready for retrieval. Another thing that you need to keep in mind is that you do not have to eat or drink anything for 7 hours before the planned egg collection. 

The IVF egg collection procedure involves minor surgery under the influence of sedation or anaesthesia to ensure comfort. The doctor guides a needle through the vaginal wall into each ovary with the help of ultrasound guidance. Using a suction device attached to the needle, the doctor gently pulls out eggs from the ovaries. After aspirating the eggs from ovaries they are kept under observation to assess their quality. After this, they are kept in a culture medium and incubated until they are ready for fertilisation. 

After the completion of the egg retrieval procedure, you will be kept under observation for 1-2 hours. Post egg retrieval process you may experience some pain in your pelvic area and also blood-stained fluid discharge from the vagina may occur. These are common side-effects and there are no reasons to worry about the same.
