Embryoscope

An innovative time-lapse imaging
and incubation system which allows
us to monitor the full development
of fertilized eggs

Introduction to Embryoscope

In the field of IVF, one of the greatest challenges is selecting the best embryos which are likely to give you the result of a full term pregnancy and healthy baby.

In traditional manual assessments, the embryologist has to remove the embryos from the optimum controlled environment of the incubator to perform several evaluations of their development, performed over a period of 3-5 days to assess embryo development potential and quality. The time taken to conduct this process is restrictive as the embryo culture can only be removed from the incubator for a minimum about of time to ensure no distress to the embryos.

The introduction of an Embryoscope™ time-lapse system allows us to monitor the developing embryos throughout the full course of their development without removing them from a stable incubated environment. The integrated camera and microscope automatically takes an image of your embryos every 10 minutes to produce a time-lapse video of the vital stages of development enabling enhanced assessment by our team.

This detailed development information allows us to identify only the best quality embryos for a future transfer procedure.

Who All Needs to Undergo an Embryoscope Assessment?

Whilst Embryoscope time lapse assessment can be used in any IVF treatment cycle, it can be particularly beneficial in situations where there have been repeated implantation failure, is advanced maternal age or where there has been a history of recurrent miscarriage.

The above procedure is considered to be a treatment add-on by the HFEA. To read more on treatment add on please click here.

How Does the Embryoscope Process Work?

The woman will need to undertake an in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycle to stimulate her ovaries to produce eggs. After egg collection and confirmed fertilization with your partner’s (or donors) sperm, the embryologist will prepare your embryos for incubation. These can then be easily monitor throughout their development.

If you have an ICSI procedure, we will place your eggs in the Embryoscope after injection to enable us to observe the moment of fertilization.

What Happens After the Embryo Scope Process Is Completed?

When we have identified the best embryos using our specialised embryoscope selection algorithm, we would select one or two embryos for transfer.

In the event your embryos are going to be frozen we shall use this vital information when ‘warming’  them and as a priority we would first select the best embryos to thaw for a potential embryo transfer.

What Are the Side Effects or Risks to an Embryoscope Treatment?

There are no side effects or risks to having your embryos observed using an Embryoscope as it is a professionally endorsed system that meets the strict requirements in culturing embryos.

However, it is possible that owing to the enhanced level of assessment, our embryologist may deem that no suitable embryos are available for transfer or freezing as they may have presented irregularities which might not otherwise have been observed in a manual assessment. If this is the case, our consultant will discuss other treatment options with you.
